It may not work as planned; plan anyway

Worst case scenario will point out the areas that you need to plan for better in the future. If you need more skills and experience, there is no two ways about it, work on it. When dealing with a new project with completely new details, do your research on it. What may work in one area will be a total failure in another. Things happen even when you have ticked all the boxes, so it pays to plan for any eventualities. You may have provisions for different scenarios and they may or may not have happened now but you will thank yourself when they do.

Best case scenario may enable you to save time and money; you were able to do everything in record time and used fewer resources. You may have to consider stretching yourself next time to do more; that maybe your team is better than you thought. There may be need to reduce the resources allocated for similar jobs in the future. Then again, it could also be that it was good fortune that made it possible to achieve the milestone. In that case, you thank your lucky stars and keep to the same plan for future.

There are some professions that have greater successes with plans than others. However, the need for plans however rudimentary is important. Your plans may still not work even when you are an expert in your field but then again it is an opportunity to learn. Just like anything else, planning gets better with time and experience. Plans are not cast in stone though; they may undergo editing as the project continues.

The truth of the matter is that things rarely work according to plan. Worst case scenario is things don’t work at all and you are forced to come up with an impromptu plan on the fly. This may or may not work but it saves the situation. Best case scenario is it works very well, all according to plan, with minor hitches and you even manage to do things more efficiently than you thought.

Regardless of the outcome, the advantage is that there are lessons to be learnt in each case. In the worst case scenario, you will realize that you were clearly either lacking enough knowledge and experience or it was a new endeavor and you didn’t do your reconnaissance well. You could also have just gotten into some bad luck when something beyond your team’s control happens. In the best case scenario, it shows that your team is well organized and has been able to work through the plan efficiently. You could also have been very lucky and circumstances beyond your control ensured that you were successful.
