Win some, lose some

The thing with sport is that it has amazing similarities with life and business. On a normal day, you get to do a wide range of tasks in your daily life. There are days or even weeks when nothing is going right; this is both at work and in your personal life. Then comes the sunshine and you have a winning streak; things are getting better for another few weeks. Your business will build a good brand and steadily grow in sales, then at other times will be going through a serious PR nightmare or the new product just doesn't sell.

At the end of the day, life and business are long term endeavours and just like sport, you have to show up for all the games to raise you chances of winning more of them. We want to win all the time but it is never the case. There will be times when you have more wins and 'win the championship' but there will also be times when you lose more and not get a podium finish. Win some, lose some.

I am not a huge sports fan, never have been; if my favourite team loses, I will not lose a wink of sleep about it. However, I watch 60% of the games during the World Cup; that's the one time I am keenly watching sport in any capacity. During the times I watch a league football match, an F1 race, a basketball game or a marathon, then I am all in. No distractions are allowed; I watch every minute. The rest of the times, I am watching a highlight video on YouTube and then I read about it. The reading part makes me very knowledgeable on the statistics of the game and the players.

The numbers are amazing but very similar across the board. There may be the odd boxing heavyweight champion who has a clean sheet but the journey to winning always features loss. The wining team on the English Premier League during the 2020-2021 season was Manchester City. They played 38 games, won 27 games, drawing 5 and losing 6. The F1 World Champion this year, Max Verstappen raced 22 times, won 10 times with 18 podium finishes. The greatest Marathon runner in history, Eliud Kipchoge also, shockingly to me, has had days where he didn't clinch a podium finish. I told myself that I wouldn't mention him since it is so cliche' but the great Chicago Bulls team of the 90s led by Michael Jordan won 72 games and lost 10 games during the 1995-1996 season.
