Does your recipe work?
What made it successful in my view is that the food was predictable: the quality was the same; how the chips and chicken tasted was the same. You knew right away what you’re paying for. You could taste random piece of chips and know right away, it was from Sonford. The interior hadn’t changed since it was opened so you get the same vibe when you get in. This is one establishment that never had any ads; didn’t need to.
This story parallels with those of international brands like KFC and McDonalds; I read about them but actually got introduced to them through American movies. The narrative is that the food they serve goes through a certain process with a secret recipe or ingredient. The end result is the characteristic taste that their customers have grown to love. They perfect the process that generates good results and consistently work at it which continuously ensures success.
There are many people and businesses that just do the work and sometimes get it right but mostly don’t. When thing go well; this is the time to go back and scrutinize your process. Pick out those small things that you did differently and include them in your day to day business or work procedures. The goal is to have a winning procedure that guarantees results; formulate your recipe.

I was walking in Downtown Nairobi recently and I came across this building that had recently burned down. Among the businesses that was razed to the ground was Sonford Fish and Chips; this was a fast food joint that has been a staple of Nairobi’s mostly young crowd. If you were in Nairobi in your college years, you most likely had chips and chicken here at some point. Just before or after a night out, you would definitely pass through Sonford. This is not to say older people didn’t frequent this establishment; it always had a steady stream of people of all ages, from all walks of life, coming in 24 hours a day.
Before I forget, let me be clear: ‘chips’ is what Americans call ‘French Fries’ or ‘fries’. Those of you who speak British English are fine. Also, the place was called Sonford Fish and Chips but they never sold fish ever. Back to my story.
