What is Your Core Business?

Later on that day, the cyber cafe came back to my mind. How was it that they were so incompetent at providing the one service the whole business was built for? They failed at their core business.

It made me question myself: what is my core business and am I good at it? Am I giving it the time and resources it requires to grow?

Your business prides itself in being the best at delivering products to all towns in the country. Your vehicles however are rarely serviced at all and your drivers poorly paid with no rest. There are constant delays because of vehicle breakdowns and a very high turnover of drivers.

You run a small convenience store, a duka as we call it here in Kenya, but half the time you are either closed or don't have the key items your customers always ask for.

As a manager, your team works on auto-pilot; no clear direction, no goals, no training. Your department is always falling short and you yell at them a lot.

You are the CEO but you want to be involved in all minor decisions right to approving the smallest of expenses. What time will you do your main job? To lead?

Some experiences help us to better ourselves. They make you see what you don't like and question whether you, as an individual can measure up. It applies whether you are an entrepreneur, a business leader or an employee.

So I am asking myself again: What is my core business? Am I giving it the time and resources it requires to grow?

I am in town and I have to work on something really quick and send it on email. I decide to go to the nearest cyber cafe and log in to a computer. The computer was very slow, it took some time for the browser to launch. When it finally did launch, it took what seemed like an eternity to load the homepage. I motioned to the attendant for help. I was advised to sit at the next computer and try. Same result after 'eternity'.

The attendant wasn't much of help either. There was a lot of clicking of the mouse but you could tell, nothing was forthcoming. I left in a huff; annoyed that even after losing precious time, I still wasn't able to accomplish my goal.
